2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa. Armenia 0-2 Turkey

2010 South Africa World Cup qualifying campaign has started on September 6 in European zone. Armenia hosted EURO-2008 semifinalist Turkey on Hrazdan stadium. Interest to this match was as huge as Armenia and Turkey presidents, about 300 journalists and many football high ranking officials were present.
In first half was equal game with small chances to score. Ten minutes before halftime central defender of our team Robert Arzumanyan got an injury and was substituted by Romik Khachatryan who occupied a place in central zone. Ararat Arakelyan was forced to play in central defender place. Later Armenia head coach Jan Poulsen said that was one of reasons of defeat.
Anyway Turkey opened the score on 60th minute. Roman Berezovski couldn’t save hosts from Tuncay Sanli short-range shot. Conceiving a goal, Armenia started to play faster, but on 78th minute Semih Senturk scored the second goal and brought Turkey first win in group.

Jan Poulsen, Armenia national team head coach
I want to thank players and fans. They did everything for win. But it’s football. We must be real thinking and be honest with ourselves that today won that team which stronger now. Our players did everything they can, but if we look at the teams where Turkish footballers are playing, we must realize how strong they are. We didn’t lose to our rivals in first half, but after first goal something has changed in our game. Robert Arzumanyan’s injury also was one of the reasons of our defeat. Well, it’s just one game. We will analyze our mistakes to improve our game in future.
What about next match with Spain, let’s not forget that they are European champions.

Fatih Terim, Turkey national team head coach
Before I begin to answer to the questions I’d like to thank hosts for brilliant hospitality. Few days ago were my birthday and our players made me a good present. It’s very difficult to concentrate and show a good game after successful EURO-2008. I will await our second game.
